With a 114-110 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of the NBA Finals Thursday night, the Raptors capped a dramatic series filled with twists and turns, lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy for the first time in franchise history.
Stephen Curry missed a contested 3-pointer in the waning moments before Golden State called a timeout it didn't have, giving Leonard a technical free throw with 0.9 seconds left to seal it.
Leonard then got behind Andre Iguodala for a layup as the buzzer sounded, but it went to review and the basket was called off before Leonard's two free throws. That only delayed the celebration for a moment.
Eventually, the Raptors managed to pull ahead thanks to some clutch shotmaking by Fred VanVleet, whose triple from the top of the key with 3:44 remaining put Toronto ahead for good, and sent the Raptors on their way to the title so many thought this team would never win.
After five contests of at least 23 points to begin the series and a 22-point performance to clinch the championship that included a couple of clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter, Kawhi Leonard put a nice bow on his season with the second Finals MVP of his career.
The 27-year-old also walked away with the distinction in 2014 when he won the Larry O'Brien Trophy with the San Antonio Spurs.
Golden State Warriors forward Klay Thompson was in the middle of putting together another epic "Game 6 Klay" performance — 28 points on 8-for-12 shooting late in the third quarter — when he went down hard after being fouled on a dunk attempt, silencing the Oracle Arena crowd on Thursday.
After having witnessed Kevin Durant go down for the season with a ruptured Achilles in Game 5, fans and fellow NBA players feared the worst as Thompson went back to the locker room.
However, halfway down the tunnel, Thompson stopped and turned around, making his way back out the the court in a moment reminiscent of Paul Pierce's triumphant return in the 2008 NBA Finals.
Thompson made both of his free throws, giving him 30 points for the game, before heading back to the locker room. Doris Burke reported on the broadcast that he would not return to the game, and he eventually left the arena on crutches.
湯神命中了2次罰球后，為勇士隊得到了30分，隨后返回了更衣室。 Doris Burke 在轉播中報道了湯普森將不會回到賽場，隨后也拄著拐杖離開了球館。
The Warriors led 85-80 when Thompson departed, but the Raptors came back to win 114-110, clinching the first championship in team history.
